So true! When you get older you realize that we’re all just trying to get through life the best we can and that the people we come into contact with are on a journey too. I try to give people understanding and mercy because I know I need the same!
William, thank you for the great example of not allowing unpleasant outcomes to blur the positivity of life’s great experiences. I’m sure it’s not always easy to do but proof that if done correctly, it can continue to benefit you for as long as you live.
Thank you for your kind words. It is hard. Especially when you’re 22 and still immature like I was. As you well know, life experiences and maturity give us more understanding.
Another beautiful letter. The moment Lynn told you that the loved you moved me - as well as the disappointment of seeing them changed after Nepal. Such experiences stay with you. It is really sad to see that they somehow lost the light in them.
I also think that their daughter’s illness and the battle the whole family had to fight took its toll on them as well. Some of the things I witnessed when Jacinta had to go to Hopkins were pretty awful. That poor family went through a lot.
Wow, this story made me emotional. It was heartwarming to read about the positive impact the Gilbert family had on your life. As someone who also comes from a difficult background, I understand how grateful you must have felt when your parents' friends took care of you and your siblings.
You're right that support can't go on forever. Eventually, with genuine care and assistance, we can learn to stand on our own two feet.
It's unfortunate that the Gilbert family's "happy life" came to an end, but I hope they're doing well again and that you are too.
Thank you for commenting. Yes it is an emotional story. They still keep in touch with my mom although Mr Gord had a stroke in 2012. Back in 2009 they came to visit my parents and my mom told me to stop over. I did and they did seem somewhat interested in my life. They even stopped by my work the next day before they left. That was pretty cool. But it’s not like we’ve kept in touch since, and anything I hear I hear from my mom of course. I do know that Jacinta and Tandy are doing well. It’s really a miracle Jacinta has lived as long as she has because the DRs told Lynn and Gord she would never make it past her teens. Now here she is in her 50s running a farm!!
This conversation between you and your son shows me that it is life which teaches us about life. Your reminiscence reminded me of my kiss on the neck that taught me I had worth, value and beauty. So glad I I stumbled from your son’s letter to yours this morning. Ya’ll are blessings!
This is such a cool idea, thank you for writing these letters back and forth!! There's just something about letters that "hits home" more than other correspondence 😉

I think perhaps we've all had an angel or two in our lives.

Hello William,
it is surprising that they did come over (in a good way of course).
I hope that Jacinta lives a long and fulfilling life.
Thank you Tom!
